< Turn 03

After a day of rest in Rillwater, the Golden Lions begin making arrangements leave with Geva Tenly to begin their journey to Carenhold. As they prepare, Brother Garrik is taken aside by Sister Wynna. She confided in Garrik that one of the monastery’s relics, the urn of Saint Nythar, had gone missing some time ago. She presumed whomever took it had nefarious intent and it may be tied to the unnatural threats in the region Brother Garrik would soon be facing so asked that if he found it, he return it to the monastery, to which Garrik agreed.

One night a few days out of Carenhold the Lions’ roadside camp was attacked by a band of roving fiends, lead by huge infernal spawn. The Lions tried to rally, as the creatures had snuck up on them in near silence, but the fiends closed to melee too quickly.

Brother Garrik ordered Waltom to help Geva get her belongings moving while the Lions attempted to hold the creatures off. They hoped to route the fiends quickly but the infernal spawn leapt into Aldric and slammed him into the roadside cobble wall and sent the noble to the ground, unmoving, the lions realized they were likely over their head.

Safira quickly to one of the fiends, leaving Garrik and Adara to try and hold off the ones in front. Meanwhile Thallion managed to shoot one of the to trying to flank the team, making a fighting retreat to try and join and support his companions and killing a second in the process.

I strongly considered using the Stars of the Show option to have the entire warband flee at this point but decided to try and stick it out. But if I could just kill two more fiends I could flee without having to roll flight in the dark for my survivors.

Garrik bravely made himself a target, drawing the infernal spawn’s attention as he tried to bash fiends that got close. He held off the spawn while Adara and Thallion cut down a couple more fiends until he finally managed to unleash Soladan’s wrath, binding the remaining creatures in restraining holy light.

The creatures frozen in place mere feet from the exhausted Lions, Garrik ordered a retreat. Geva and the Lions gathered their fallen companions and beat feet to put as much distance between them and the creatures as they could before Garrik’s divine spell faded.

Technically only three of the remaining four enemies were hit with the bind spell, but this narratively covers their escape.

Once they were safely away they checked on their companions. Aldric miraculously - and in his mind, embarrassingly - had no major injuries. Safira had taken a deep wound to her shoulder though and it would be some time before she could draw her bow.

The Lions’ moved at double pace, reaching Carenhold by the end of the next day. Exhausted, they parted ways with Geva - who expressed her deepest thanks for protecting her and her caravan - and found an inn for the night.

While eating a quiet, somber meal in the common room, they overhear locals complaining about an organized force setting up camp and harassing travelers. Curious if they have a connection to the fiends they saw, Garrik makes a note to investigate when everyone is back on their feet.
