In the morning Brother Garrik meets Sister Wynna at the monastery to deliver her letter. During the meeting she explains that an ogre has recently attacked one of the outlaying farms and was waylaying any who traveled the road towards Summershield, effectively cutting off any trade or incoming help. She offers payment if the Lions could handle the threat — otherwise they would have to wait for Carenhold to send aid which would likely take some time. Garrik agreed.

I wasn’t sure how to handle deployment with the escort. The rulebook says that temporary characters like Geva Tenley must be deployed in battle, but narratively it didn’t make much since. The warband was heading out to the ogre’s lair then coming right back before traveling on and she could easily just wait in town. So I compromised, deploying them but not having them take up one of my 6 deployment slots.

The Lions made quick preparations and headed out, following Wynna’s directions to the farmstead. Most of the warband remained in cover while Safira scouted the farmstead. She expected to find the ogre lairing in one of the ruined buildings but was surprised to find it sleeping in a nearby copse of trees.

Safira signaled to the rest of the Lions to join her to lure the creature into the center of the farmstead where they could use the cover of the fences to slow it down, but the commotion woke the ogre, who quickly charged the mercenaries.

Safira began harassing the ogre with the support of Adara and Waltom while Aldric and Thalion began peppering it with arrows. Despite his dislike of the “peasant’s weapon”, Aldric proved quite capable. While Thalion bounced arrows off the creature’s armor repeatedly, Aldric was to land shot after shot while Safira kept the creature at bay.

At one point Adara got too close and caught the broad side of the creature’s weapon to the shoulder but Aldric slipped forward and finished the creature off with a last arrow, downing it.

Waltom splinted Adara’s arm while Garric ordered the ogre’s body drug away and burnt.

It might not have been a good idea to attempt a aberration lair fight with a brand new warband, but I thought with their decent stats it was worth the risk. 3 loot rolls and 9 marks (3 for the ogre + 6 for the contract) was too much to pass up. Luckily we didn’t get ambushed by the ogre and earned a strong campaign start for the trouble.

The Golden Lions returned to Rillwater victorious and were treated to drinks by the townsfolk in celebration. Garrik excused himself to report to Sister Wynna, who provided funds and supplies for his crusade, as well as giving him the Radiant Chest-Plate, a relic they had kept in the monastery for some time now. If there would ever be a worthy use of the holy armor, it would be a Brother of Soladan leading cleansing the land of those that would defile it.

The loot rolls were supposed to come form the lair fight, but it didn’t make sense narratively for Garrick and co. to pillage the farm, let alone find a magic artifact there. Given its theming it seemed better to move it all to the job reward.
