< Turn 05
Once the entire company is back in their feet, Brother Garrik leads the Golden Lions north to the suspicious camp. They find it nestled against the edge of a forest, surrounded by crude palisades that looked to have been made by someone with military training. Half a dozen men in wicked barbed armor seemed to be keeping watch.
Garrik stepped forward to hail them for parley, but one shouted something in a language he didn’t recognize and alerted the others. Two with bows immediately shot at the Lions, who ducked for cover behind a small copse of trees. With negotiations not an option, Garrik ordered an assault.
Thalion lead Adara in a flanking maneuver to a nearby rock outcropping, hoping to draw some of the forces, while the others pressed through the woods. Looking for a surprise attack, Garrik called upon Soladan’s blessing and blinked Aldric forward through the woods. Aldric immediately engaged the achers, but one begins deftly parrying his sword strikes with their bow.
Most of the soldiers are quickly overwhelmed but the one remaining archer makes a grand showing, dodging Aldric again and again before knocking him out by bouncing an arrow of his helmet. At first Safira fares no better but eventually she’s able to drive him back to the palisade and out maneuver him enough to run him through.
That archer was my bane. He just kept rolling 6’s to defend himself over and over. Aldric spent two entire exchanges unable to do hit it, and Safira did another. Luckily she finally managed to bring it down before I lost another character.
Adara and Thalion rejoins the group, the former helping the other walk after having the wind knocked out of him by the soldiers’ leader. They find some notes and scrolls written in an unknown language but bearing infernal marks. Garrik burns them immediately.
As the sun began setting the Lions prepare to use the camp’s defenses for the night. If any more of the soldiers return they’ll be dealt with. Either way, in the morning the camp can be burnt down when the Lions turn back for Carenhold
Aldric hasn’t survived a fight since his combat score hit 2. Figures.
